As I woke this morning with the sun pouring in through the blinds, I felt like I’d woken up with a whole new attitude. Isn’t it crazy how amazing something as simple as the sun can make you feel?
Sadly here in the UK the sun never seems to stick around for long enough – so you really need to make the most of it while you can.
There are a number of health benefits that come from getting out in the sun (as long as you make sure you’re wearing sun cream!). With summer just round the corner, here are six ways you can make the most of the sunshine this year!
1. Go for a walk
Simple, but effective.
Many underestimate how beneficial walking is. Just because you might not be slogging away on the treadmill for an hour, it’s still a great workout. Plus it’s great for clearing your mind, getting out in nature and taking some time for yourself.
If you don’t want to go alone, take your partner or a friend with you. We do our best talking when we go for long walks. It gives us a chance to get out in the fresh air and discuss everything we’ve got going on right now.
2. Go to the beach
Ahh, there’s nothing quite like vitamin sea! When the sun is shining my favourite place to be is at the beach. Taking a stroll along the sand and breathing in that fresh sea air.
The beach is one of the most tranquil places there is (providing you’re not fighting for space on a busy tourist beach). If you can find a quiet spot, take some time to just sit and listen to the waves crashing against the shore. Or maybe read a book.
If you can, stay all day and watch the sun set – the best sunsets are always at the beach!
3. Spring clean
Throw the windows open, turn up the feel good music and do some spring cleaning! Organising your home, workspace or garden is extremely therapeutic. Whether you’re having a huge clear out or just a quick tidy, there’s nothing like feeling organised.
Life is so busy and we often find these tasks get neglected. So every now and then it’s good to have a sort out. And what better time than when the sun is shining and you’re feeling motivated!
4. Take part in outdoor exercise class
Enjoy the sunshine and keep fit. Why not join an outdoor exercise class or even just go for a run if you prefer to exercise solo.
It’s a great way to re-connect with nature and with yourself. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you the benefits of exercise. But it’s perfect for blowing off some steam, clearing your mind and looking after your health.
5. Head to the pub (but just for one)
Ok, so it doesn’t have to be to the pub. You could always go for lunch and find a nice place to sit outside! But as soon as the sun comes out I find myself drawn to a sunny pub garden. If it happens to be near a body of water – even better!
But don’t get too carried away! Make sure you’re also drinking plenty of water. Especially when it gets really hot.
6. Dust off your bike and go for a ride
When it’s cold or wet outside, quite often the thought of battling through the wind and rain on a bike isn’t very appealing.
But going for a sunny bike ride can help to increase endorphins and make you feel great! Find a nice route (preferably not too hilly) and take a peaceful ride around your hometown.
It’s also a good way to get things done! Ride into town, do some shopping or run errands while enjoying yourself.
