The first steps towards planning your trip

Planning your travels is the first exciting step towards seeing the world! So if you’re ready to begin planning, there are a few easy steps you can take to get the ball rolling!

Decide where to go

The best place to start is by thinking about where you want to go. This doesn’t have to be set in stone, but this can really help you to begin thinking about how long you want to go for and how much money you’ll need. Think about whether there is a particular country or region you really want to visit, and work out from there.

Decide how long you’re going to go for

Once you’ve begun building an idea of where you want to go, it’s time to decide how long you want to go for. Will this be weeks, months, years or indefinitely? This will help you to set a budget or decide how much to save (if you plan on saving that is). It was also help you to decide whether you’re going to need to work while you’re away to fund your adventures.

Start researching costs

Next you can begin looking at costs. Start getting an idea for how much flights cost to your desired destinations. That is of if you’re flying of course.  On our trip around Europe we decided to drive, so we needed to take into consideration the cost of running a car, paying for petrol and toll roads. Start to look at the types of accommodation available and how much they cost. This will be very dependent on whether you enjoy more luxurious places or if you’re happy to bunk up in a hostel.

You can also look at activities in your locations and really begin building a picture of costs. This will help you to set a budget and make a savings plan. But when the time comes to actually booking anything be sure to shop around – there are some great bargain websites out there.

Set a budget

Once you’ve begun getting an idea of costs, you can work out how much you’ll need for your trip, particularly if you don’t plan to work while you’re away. Think realistically about how long it’s going to take you to save that amount of money – you’ve almost decided on a departure date!

Begin saving money

Once you’ve got your budget you can begin saving. Work out what you need to do to get yourself in a position to save as much as you can, and work out feasibly what you can save ach month. You may find there are extra ways you can make money along the way. For example, selling stuff you no longer need. That’s always a great money maker, and with new apps like Schpock it’s so easy!

Be strict on yourself when you begin saving. It’s good to treat yourself every once in a while, but keeping the bigger picture in mind will help you reach your goal quicker. Which means you can pack your bags and board the plane quicker!

Stay inspired

Now you’ve got the basics in place and you’ve begun working towards your goal, it’s important to stay motivated. Sometimes it can take a little time to get enough money and sort any other arrangements. So don’t lose hope along the way! Keep looking for inspiration, keep reading travel blogs and putting pins on the map. Your trip might end up bigger and better than you could have ever imagined.
